Our Five Pillars of Excellence
Tilden’s mission is to help young men strive towards excellence in every area of life. Our five pillars — Grit, Culture, Work, Friendship, and Prayer — express that pursuit: the formation of men who can govern themselves, love what is good, work with purpose, build strong friendships, and seek God faithfully.
Tilden Study Center has activities for boys in grades 8th-12th and for men in college. Activities occur throughout the year and are open to any student.
GRIT
Good things are hard. We welcome challenges because they help us grow and become more generous. We fight our own laziness and negativity so we can engage challenges with a smile.
CULTURE
Great books, art, and music enrich the soul. They point us to what is true, good, and beautiful—and remind us that work should raise the human spirit. We make the effort to learn to appreciate them.
WORK
Work is how we serve others. We don’t work only for pay or praise; we work for the common good. So we aim for excellence, integrity, and creativity. We learn to focus better, foster intellectual and professional interests, and build strong skills so our work helps more people.
FRIENDSHIP
By ourselves, we cannot make it far on the path towards excellence. Friends encourage and inspire us to persevere. We try to be selfless, humble, loyal, and courteous, and we create an environment around us where friendships can flourish.
PRAYER
God comes first. Work and growth matter only if they bring us closer to Him. We talk with God and seek to know Him. We want to become men of prayer.
